)Jeep Trip with the two 'Jerrys'

As could be seen on the previous page the two 'Jerry's' and their CJ-5 and 7 and myself are in deep snow. Really bad winter conditions. We just extracted the brown Jeep and Jerry 1 in his CJ-5 is pushing up in the distance. Vex is plowing ahead since it is the only Jeep with Lockers, dozing a trail of sorts so the other two Jeeps have some sort of packed rut to stay in. We were all running Swampers TSLs and chains too in these conditions.

VEX Pulling out 'Jerry 2'

This photo shows Jerry 2 and his brown CJ-7 stuck hard in the deep snow, about 20 minutes
later after the above photo was taken. The snow was getting deeper as we climbed. This shot
is below the Jeeps looking up the grade, opposite of the position the camera is facing the above
photo. Note chains on the Swampers on Jerry's Jeep. They also faintly show on Jerry 1s' Jeep
in the distance ahead.

Vex, Rigging for the Concrete Pull

)

On Jeep Page1 we see a few photos of Vex pulling out a 66,000 lb. concrete truck from an re-pull

event we set up from the original pull-out of the exact same truck in the exact same place for the

owners of MegaWinch to video and see what their winch device can do when rigged and used

properly. They and some of their engineers came up from the MegaWinch Headquarters in

Portland, OR. Here, we see me and one of the three 50 ton logging snatch blocks attached to

the front of Vex. I'm setting the winch's rewind plate to receive the correct rap for the line as it

comes on the drum when winching commences. The other two blocks complete the doubling

and tripling of line on the front of the concrete truck's bumper. The line is 3/8ths inch thick aircraft

and marine rated line from those industries. It is not just cable.

The front and rear of Vex is beefed up with 1" plate steel along the frame rails to accommodate this

sort of thing, and those blocks are serious too. DO NOT try this with those little toy snatch blocks

that come with winch accessory kits and do not rely on the stock Jeep frame to hold up under this sort

of thing. It will pull apart or worse.

Vex, Rigging to the Truck

This is the 'truck' side of the rig up from that photo above. That is John, the driver of the
truck who was helping me rig the outfits up for the re-pull. Note one of the other 50 ton
rated logging snatch blocks and the doubling of the line back to Vex. To figure the pull
amount you have 12,000 lb. pull capacity of the winch on the first layer of line on the drum.
Doubling it with one block brings that to 24,000 lbs of pull. Tripling it again with a 2nd block brings
that up to 48,000 lbs. And adding the last block doubles that again to 96,000 lbs ofpull. The line
is rated at 120 tons of breakaway pull dynamics to failure, so we are well within range of the line strength.

VEX, Almsot Rigged

Here we see me pulling a slight kink in the line until it lays well in the drum wrap. A pull
like this requires no kinks or twists in the cable which can be distaerous otherwise--the line
must be laid flat and smooth on the drum. In my other hand is the front winch controller.

VEX Pulling the Concrete Truck Out

And here we see Vex pulling the truck out of its re-stuck position. I decided to use only two

blocks this time to demonstrate the pulling power of the MegaWinch. The pull took 14 minutes

for the winch to pull the truck up on the gravel road. Line speed for the low speed gear ratio of

the winch doubled like this is quite slow. (MegaWinches have a 2 speed transmission--high gear

for free spooling line back in and out, low gear for working. They also have an absolutely clever

rewind plate that relays the line back in perfect order across the drum spool as it is rewinding--the

only electric winches so equipped on the market today with these features.)
